PRESS RELEASE
Dunn and Brown
Fifth Anniversary Exhibition
September 10 – October 9, 2004
Dunn and Brown Contemporary opens the fall season with a group exhibition celebrating the gallery’s 5th anniversary. Founded in 1999 by Talley Dunn and Lisa Brown, Dunn and Brown Contemporary focuses on exhibiting groundbreaking work in a variety of media by established and emerging artists.
This exhibition will include recent works by artists represented by the gallery including Helen Altman, David Bates, Julie Bozzi, Vernon Fisher, Brian Fridge, Sam Gummelt, Trenton Doyle Hancock, Joseph Havel, Annette Lawrence, Melissa Miller, Amy Myers, Nic Nicosia, Sam Reveles, Linda Ridgway, Laurence Scholder, Christian Schumann, Michael Smith, Matthew Sontheimer, Liz Ward, William Wegman, and Mel Ziegler. Works exhibited in the anniversary show will range from monumental paintings and installations to intimate works on paper and photographs.
Since opening in the fall of 1999, Dunn and Brown Contemporary has distinguished itself through a series of impressive projects and endeavors. Beginning with gallery facility itself, owners Dunn and Brown purchased the building complex at 5020 Tracy Street just months after opening the gallery. The 10,000 square foot warehouse facility was renovated in stages to include the Main Gallery exhibition space, the Project Gallery, large-scale painting and sculpture storage, viewing rooms, and offices. The gallery complex is unlike any other in the country and is the largest of its kind in the state of Texas.
Most importantly, Dunn and Brown Contemporary encourages the growth and development of gallery artists through the combination of an ambitious exhibition program and an ongoing dialogue with museum curators and art critics from the United States and Europe. In addition to organizing year-round exhibitions at the gallery, Dunn and Brown Contemporary collaborates with numerous museums, institutions, and galleries both nationally and internationally. In 2000, Dunn and Brown Contemporary was the only gallery in the country representing five artists in the prestigious Biennial Exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art. Those gallery artists in the Biennial were Vernon Fisher, Brian Fridge, Nic Nicosia, Joseph Havel, and Trenton Doyle Hancock. Furthermore, artists represented by Dunn and Brown have exhibited in numerous one person and group exhibitions at museums throughout the country including the Dallas Museum of Art; Cleveland Museum of Art; Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston; Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Museum of Modern Art, New York; and Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, among others. In addition, Dunn and Brown has participated in exhibitions and projects across Europe. The gallery was one of the few American galleries to represent an artist in both the Lyon Biennial and Istanbul Biennial last year.
The opening reception for the artists will be on Friday, September 10 from 6:00 until 8:00. Please contact Elizabeth Phy at the gallery for additional information or to request visuals. Dunn and Brown Contemporary is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday from 11:00 until 5:00 p.m. and by appointment.
