PRESS RELEASE
Christian Schumann
Plastic Youth
October 26 - December 15, 2007
Dunn and Brown Contemporary is pleased to announce an exhibition of new work by internationally renowned Los Angeles-based artist Christian Schumann. Plastic Youth will include new paintings as well as works on paper. This exhibition will open with a reception October 26, 6:00 - 8:00PM and will continue through December 15, 2007.
Over the past several years, Schumann has been exploring his technical process of painting, as well as his use of imagery, both of which are visually evident in his new series. Similar to past work, however, Schumann’s canvases consistently portray a colorful chaos of various forms and movements. The artist himself describes his most recent painting process:
The recent paintings are composed with a technique of transferring acrylic paint from plastic sheets onto canvas. First generation gesture is mutated and torn upon the act of collage; the primary act becomes a secondary event after which the composition is evaluated and added to with a third direct application of paint which alludes to the plastic motion and construction of paint itself.
Through this delicate and intricate process the forms in Schumann’s paintings become his language, broken into fragments and stages, yet still communicative to the viewer. Gesture and improvisation slowly accumulate into layers that interact to create a subtext of allusion and pliable meaning. The layers of constructed plastic becomes a translation of the natural process of human thought, alluding to the plasticity of human nature, its language, and internal worlds.
Born in Rhode Island, Schumann moved to Texas as a young child and graduated from Dallas’ prestigious Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in 1988. The artist continued his education on the West Coast, receiving his B.F.A. from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1992. Most recently, Schumann’s work has been included in exhibitions at Pilar Parra & Romero, Madrid, Carlier | Gebauer, Berlin, and Patrick Painter Inc, Los Angeles, CA. His work can be found in several museum collections, including the Dallas Museum of Art, Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, Museum of Modern Art, New York, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. Christian Schumann currently lives and works in Los Angeles, California.
Christian Schumann will be present at the opening reception on Friday, October 26, 2007. Dunn and Brown Contemporary is open to the public on Tuesday through Saturday from 11:00 am until 5:00 pm and by appointment.
